Honda models have many electronic monitoring components. The information synthesized by these computerized systems is crucial in keeping your vehicle in good condition. As a driver, you will see them as blue, green, orange, or red dashboard lights.
We will look at the most common and crucial Honda dashboard warning light symbols. Read on for details.
Keyless Ignition Detection Indicator
The presence of an electronic key in a push-button start or keyless entry vehicle has different symbols, depending on the model. In some, it is a yellow key with lines radiating from it, while others show it as an unlocked padlock also with lines coming from it. A green key with an exclamation point is also a rare possibility.
If the ignition key is not present in the car, a red key with an exclamation mark flashes on the dashboard. The yellow unlocked padlock may also appear if the key fob has a low battery. Contact your dealer or refer to your car manual for more information.
High/Low Temperature Lights
The high-temperature indicator is a red symbol of a thermometer floating on a wavy liquid surface. It may be a yellow word symbol saying, HOT COOLANT TEMP. Whichever the case, your engine is overheating. You should stop your vehicle and let it cool before carefully driving to an auto repair shop for diagnosis.
The low-temperature symbol is a blue version of the high-temperature indicator. It shows that the coolant temperature is below the minimum for optimal performance. In some cases, you may see alternating red and blue temperature indicators. If it flashes, there is an electrical fault in the cooling system.
Daytime Running Lights
Daytime running light indicator is a three-letter acronym DRL that illuminates the dashboard in yellow. It shows that your daylights are on. The lights are comparable to fog lights. They increase the visibility of your vehicle by alerting other road users such as cyclists, motorists, and pedestrians of your presence.

Trunk Open Light
The trunk open indicator is a red car with its trunk open. It comes on if the lock is not latching or due to a malfunctioning locking mechanism. Regardless of the cause, you should pull by the roadside to lock it. If the indicator light doesn’t turn off, take your vehicle to a mechanic for repair as the locking mechanism is malfunctioning.
Auto Idle Stop Light
An auto idle stop is a system in your car that reduces fuel wastage by shutting down the engine when the vehicle is not moving. Instead of keeping the engine running in the jam or at a red light, it automatically shuts off without affecting headlights, AC, etc.
If you activate the auto idle-stop system, your dashboard will have a yellow symbol of the letter A and a clockwise-pointing arrow cycling it. If this doesn’t show up when you flip the switch, there is a problem with the system, and you should take your vehicle to a mechanic.
Lane Keeping Assist System
Lane-keeping assist is a system in your Honda vehicle that does just what its name suggests. It will blink when the car moves close to either the right or left edge of the lane. But that only happens when the markers are visible.
The lane-keeping assist indicator is a picture symbol of a car between two dotted parallel lines. As mentioned, the light only blinks on the dashboard when the lane markers are visible.
Economy Mode Indicator
An economy mode makes your vehicle more fuel-efficient and reduces its environmental footprints. When you flip its switch, a green acknowledging light with the word ECO MODE, ECO, or ECON appears. Some models show it as a green leaf.
Selecting an economy mode will change some settings on different vehicle systems to give you more mileage per gallon.

Integrated Motor Assist Light
Integrated Motor Assist indicator light is a yellow acronym showing as IMA. You will only see this light in a hybrid Honda model. This light usually comes on when you turn the ignition key on and stays lit for just a few seconds. If you see it at any other time, you should take the vehicle to a mechanic for a possible repair.
Adaptive Front Lighting System Light
This indicator light illuminates the dashboard when this system is on is a yellow acronym AFS or AFLS. If the symbol includes OFF, it means the system is offline. But if the AFS OFF persists, it indicates a fault in the system.
Alternatively, some models show an adaptive front lighting system active with a light beam from an old-school lamp and a double-sided, curved arrow. An exclamation mark accompanies the yellow symbol to show a malfunction in the system.
An AFLS monitors the steering angle to automatically adjust the headlights for optimum view around bends when driving at night.
Super Handling All-Wheel Drive Indicator
Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) indicator is a yellow letter symbol showing as AWD, SERV AWD, or the latter with an exclamation point. It lights up when the all-wheel-drive mechanism disengages and switches to front-wheel drive due to fault. The likely cause is an overheating differential, meaning you should pull over and let it cool. Better still, take your vehicle to an auto repair shop for further diagnosis.
Some models show the fault with a front and rear axles symbol and an exclamation point. The word AWD also appears between the axles.
Active or Advanced Cruise Control Indicator
ACC indicator is a green symbol of a car, speedometer, and an arrow pointing at it. In some models, it is just a green acronym ACC. This indicator shows that the cruise control system is active and functions well. The system constantly monitors the traffic and responds appropriately by adjusting the speed.
In some models, the indicator is a green car with a double arrow behind it. If the system adjusts the speed according to the traffic, the indicator changes to yellow/amber.
Brake Press Indicator
The indicator has two versions depending on your Honda model. The first one is a yellow symbol of a brake and accelerator pedal with an arrow pointing at the brake pedal. Manual transmission vehicles also include a clutch pedal. The second version is a foot or a shoe on the pedal.
A constantly lit brake press indicator asks you to step on the brake. But if it flashes, there is a malfunction in the braking system. The Electronic Park Brake or Automatic Brake Hold may fail to function well.
Message Indicator
The message indicator is a yellow circle with an upward-facing exclamation point inside. The light informs the driver of the available message on the instrument panel’s display. Stop the car to read it and comprehend its content. It may be a simple reminder of scheduled maintenance or a major fault with one or more vehicle systems. The message indicator can also come with other dashboard symbols that you should also check.
Advanced Driver Assist System Indicator
An advanced driver assist system indicator is a grayscale or a yellow symbol. It is usually a car between two parallel lines and lines radiating from the front and rear corners. Alternatively, you can see a yellow letter P inside a box with lines radiating from it. The latter version often shows up when you activate the park assist system.

The advanced driver assist system indicator often comes with messages on the instrument panel’s display. Read them to learn about various systems’ status and interpret the symbol better. Find out the cause and resolve the problem or contact your mechanic if you cannot do it yourself.
EV Charging Indicator
EV Charge Indicator symbol is a green, typical electrical plug that stays on or blinks as the hybrid vehicle charges. It automatically turns off upon charge completion. The red or yellow version warns you not to drive away when the vehicle is still charging or plugged in. Other vehicle models show it simply as a green word CHARGE or white CHG against a black background.
Hydrogen Leak Indicator
The hydrogen leak indicator is one of Honda dashboard warning light symbols with a yellow letter H and a subscript 2, a chemical representation of hydrogen gas. The light turns on momentarily on startup, but if it stays on for some time, it shows a possible hydrogen leak. An extended hydrogen leak problem will result in loss of acceleration, power, and loss of electrical power. You better pull over at a safe place when you see the hydrogen leak indicator light and call a qualified mechanic to check your vehicle.
EV Mode Operation Indicator
EV Mode Operation Indicator is a green light showing EV MODE, EV, or a car with the acronym EV. This is an acknowledging dashboard symbol. It indicates a hybrid vehicle uses an electric motor only. Another version includes a clock at the top-right corner. That means the EV mode and high voltage battery are not in use. They will only be available during an unindicated economic time.
Bed Lights On Indicator
The indicator is a yellow symbol of an inverted, bell-shaped lamp with beams pointing downwards. It is only available on pickup trucks with bed lighting and will only come on when the bed lights are on. You can turn the lights off if you no longer use them.
EV System Warning and Hybrid Service Indicator
The indicator is a yellow symbol of a car with an exclamation point going through it. This shows an impending malfunction of one of the EV systems in your vehicle. If it turns red, take your car to an authorized auto repair shop for immediate service to fix the fault.

Electronically Controlled Brake System Symbol
The first electronically controlled brake system symbol is a circle with an exclamation point inside. Two arcs on both sides also represent brake pads. This yellow light shows a minor problem with the system. A red one shows a serious fault that requires immediate attention.
Another version, also common in the United States, is a yellow/amber word symbol of BRAKE SYSTEM. You can still operate the brakes even with this yellow light. But if it turns red, call your mechanic immediately.

The systems discussed here use radar while others use cameras, which can be found here. These systems, and those that follow, are all moving in the direction of automatic braking, which all manufacturers have promised to install in all passenger vehicles by roughly 2020. Regardless of name or acronym, the systems, if fitted, minimize the risk of injury if a crash becomes unavoidable. The vehicle will alter its suspension and brake settings (apply the brakes) and the front seat belts are tightened. If one of these indicator symbols is shown on your instrument cluster, it indicates a problem with the system and the vehicle should be taken to your dealer or authorized repair facility." |
